Nuclear Remote System Engineer

Description:

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Remote System Engineer to work in our Fuels PIE Instrument & Data Science Engineering Department. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our MFC facility with every Friday off. You will report to a senior manager.

The Nuclear Remote System Engineer uses engineering fundamentals to perform work in a remotely operated hot cell environment for Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) on highly irradiated nuclear reactor fuels. Integrated with Engineering, Research, and Operations, the engineer acts as a gatekeeper for in-cell remote applications, balancing engineering processes with research needs and operational conduct.

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Provide innovative and practical engineering solutions to research-related program challenges, designing, operating, and maintaining specialized equipment (often unique designs) in a remote hot-cell environment.
  2. Collect, interpret, and report technical data from process instrumentation, equipment, and systems to meet research goals.
  3. Maintain documentation and operational procedures for process instrumentation, equipment, and systems. Write, review, and revise PIE documentation, procedures, and engineering drawings.
  4. Manage configuration of assigned systems and utilize the Engineering Change process for repairs, modifications, or upgrades.
  5. Modify existing process instrumentation/systems to support new missions.
  6. Troubleshoot electromechanical instrumentation, equipment, and systems in-cell.
  7. Modify commercial equipment for remote applications. Install and qualify new PIE equipment and instrumentation.
  8. Serve as the technical interface between nuclear facility operations, principal investigators, project managers, and DOE programs, working with research personnel to define experiment-specific remote process requirements and quality assurance.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Level 1: Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mechanical, Nuclear, Materials Science, or related) with 0 years of experience.
  • Level 2: Bachelor of Science in Engineering with 2 years of experience; Master's and 0 years, PhD and 0 years.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance; US Citizenship required.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting electromechanical instrumentation and process equipment.
  • Experience with optical and digital microscopes, sample preparation, microhardness testing, and digital image processing.
  • Experience in remote hot cell engineering/operations.
  • Skills in data collection, interpretation, technical writing, and team collaboration.

Job Information:

  • Pay Range: Level 1 ($65,064 - $133,416) / Level 2 ($77,628 - $159,228). Compensation depends on education, experience, and credentials.
  • This is a testing designated position; pre-employment drug screening and periodic testing required.
  • This is a multi-level posting; placement depends on experience and skills.

Physical Requirements:
