Description:

Swimming Pool Lifeguard

The principal function of an employee in this class is to monitor the public safety while using the swimming pool and splashpad areas.

Examples of Duties

  • Constantly monitoring the safety of the swimming pool and splashpad facilities.
  • Performing rescue and first aid functions;
  • Enforcing swimming area rules and regulations;
  • Providing or assisting in providing swimming lessons;
  • Documenting accidents and other swimming-related incidents according to City requirements;
  • Participating in public swimming training, including but not limited to rescue skills, in-service training, and physical conditioning;
  • Recognize that facilities and equipment are securely and safely maintained.
  • Responding promptly to public needs.
  • Developing and maintaining positive working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, the general public, and other individuals or groups encountered through this position.
  • Performing all duties with regard for personal safety and that of other employees and the public.
  • Performing all work duties and activities in accordance with City and Department policies, procedures and safety practices.
  • Ensure the pool deck is clean, organized, and free of hazards.
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of all poolside areas.
  • Clean and sanitize bathrooms, including toilets, sink, mirrors and floors.
  • Empty trash cans and dispose of waste appropriately.
  • Perform regular deep cleaning tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Participate in regular training sessions and drills to maintain lifeguarding skills.
  • Stay updated on the latest safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Typical Qualifications

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this job.

Previous experience and/or involvement in recreation programs, lifeguarding or swimming preferred.

  • Lifeguard first aid certification;
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification
  • Ability to successfully pass a Skills Test.
  • Must have current Lifeguard Training.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of:

  • Rescue, life saving, and first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills related to a swimming environment;
  • City rules and regulations in an aquatic environment;
  • Customer service principles.

Ability to:

  • Listen carefully to, understand, and effectively communicate through oral, written, and interpersonal communication channels.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Recognize and respond quickly in an emergency situation, including the ability to discern sounds and visual cues of an emergency nature against a distracting background of normal noise and physical activity.
  • Perform rescue, first aid, and CPR functions in an emergency situation;
  • Prepare written incident reports.
  • Swim 300 yards, demonstrating use of freestyle, breaststroke, and side stroke.
  • Fairly and uniformly enforce pool and facility regulations;
  • Use tools common to the performance of the duty, including whistle, megaphone, rescue tube, and first aid equipment;
  • Lift objects over 50 pounds;
  • Sit for up to 40 minutes per rotation on a lifeguard chair or station, including a station reached by ladder;
  • Work in an outdoor environment in occasionally adverse weather conditions;
  • Work with customers of all age ranges, from infants through adults and older adults;
  • Complete assigned tasks as directed and meet deadlines.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times;
  • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;
  • Use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions.

Essential Physical Abilities

  • Listen and respond to voice instructions; to communicate effectively in person, on the telephone and in a swimming environment;
  • View and review a wide variety of written materials, to discern potential and real emergencies, and to observe public areas for safety and improvement;
  • Perform essential job functions in an indoor or outdoor setting that may require lifting/moving 50 lbs. with or without assistance, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, stretching and other physical exertions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to work at swimming areas and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions. body flexibility, stamina, strength, and balance, perform rescue and first aid operations, occupy a lifeguard station accessible by ladder, and work in an outdoor open water aquatic environment.
